  • Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

  • What does the course involve?

In this beginner's course you will learn the basic skills needed to create your own sterling silver and copper bangles. You will experience the use of a range of jewellery tools and techniques in a friendly and relaxed environment. Your experienced tutor will guide you through a range of techniques for a basic introduction to jewellery making. You will have the opportunity to learn different styles and design ideas. You will be guided through the following project over the first few weeks.

Sawing - Using the jeweller's saw to cut silver and copper pieces to size. Learn how to set up and use a range of jeweller's tools needed to make various shaped bangles.

Annealing, texturing and shaping silver/copper - Learn how to gently heat your metal to "soften" it, allowing you to then decorate your cut shape with texture and shaping techniques. You will also learn how to polish your finished design. Measure metal to size, form and shape a bangle and you will also learn how to use a hand-held butane torch to solder your bangles.

The remaining time can be used to create your own simple design using your new skills.

A selection of materials will be available to buy from your tutor at cost price. (Please bring cash for any purchases).

  • How is the course assessed?

Discussion between tutor and the students as a group and as individuals will take place each week, to guide you to improve your skills.

  • How much does it cost?

A £25 materials pack is supplied for your initial projects (Depending on shape and weight of sterling silver material that you choose, price is subject to change up or down). Please bring cash for this pack to the first evening. A selection of materials will be available to buy from your tutor at cost price. (Please bring cash for any purchases).

  • Additional Notes

All the tools and materials you will need for the course will be available at the venue. Please bring along with you the following:

An apron: (this doesn't need to be anything special or expensive, just a basic apron, old shirt or overall to protect your clothes).

Hair band: If you have long hair please bring along something to tie it back, for health and safety reasons.

Closed in shoes: We will be working with sharp and heavy tools, so please wear shoes which will protect your feet should anything fall off the work bench.

Sketch book/note book: Please bring along a note book for you own notes and design ideas. Notes will be provided to complement the techniques you will be learning but you may wish to make your own notes.

Pen and/or pencil: For note taking and your design ideas.

Container: It is a good idea to have some kind of container in which to keep your kit items, metal and any other bits and pieces. A good size is small lunch box sized but an old ice cream tub or take away container is perfect too.

Don't forget. Glasses, if you use glasses for reading and /or close up work please remember to bring them along.
