This qualification is designed for learners aged post 16 who wish to develop skills and knowledge in jewellery making. No prior knowledge of jewellery making required.
There are no entry requirements.
During this course you will learn the skills needed to design and create your own jewellery. You will experience the use of a range of jewellery tools and techniques in a friendly and relaxed environment. Your experienced tutor will guide you through a range of short projects to make a range of jewellery items, such as pendants, earrings or rings. You will have the opportunity to bring your own style and design ideas to life. You will be guided through the following projects over the first few weeks. Sawing/piercing - Using the jeweller's piercing saw to cut out a shape in silver sheet. Learn how to set up and use the saw and create a simple shape. Annealing, texturing and shaping silver - Learn how to gently heat your metal to "soften" it, allowing you to then decorate your cut shape with texture and shaping techniques. Then add findings to transform your design into a piece of jewellery. You will also learn how to polish and finish your design. Ring making - Learn how to measure a ring size, form and shape and ring and you will also learn how to use a hand held butane torch to solder your silver ring. You will have the option to decorate the surface of the ring or use a range of simple surface finishes.
You will cover 4 units: - Exploring craft and enterprise skills; Research and develop design ideas for craft items; Respond to a craft brief.
The units above will be assessed and graded, thorough course work submission and discussion.
You will complete a portfolio of work which includes photographic evidence of your completed designs and some assignment work. Your portfolio will be assessed by external moderators for the qualification.
The tutor will discuss materials with you, bring £15.00 on the first day. However due to the nature of the programme, there will be further costs, dependant on your choice of material and design. This can be discussed with the tutor.
Most of the tools and materials you will need for the course will be available. Please bring along with you the following: An apron: (this doesn't need to be anything special or expensive, just a basic apron, old shirt or overall to protect your clothes). Hair band: If you have long hair please bring along something to tie it back with, for health and safety reasons. Closed in shoes: We will be working with sharp and heavy tools, so please wear shoes which will protect your feet should anything fall off the work bench. Sketch book/note book: Please bring along a note book for you own notes and design ideas. Notes will be provided to complement the techniques you will be learning but you may wish to make your own notes. Pen and/or pencil: For note taking and your design ideas. Container: It is a good idea to have some kind of container in which to keep your kit items, metal and any other bit and pieces. A good size is small lunch box sized but an old ice cream tub or take away container is perfect too. Ideas: Bring along any pictures, photos, drawings which have inspired you and which you could use to inspire you designs. Don't forget. Glasses, if you use glasses for reading and /or close up work please remember to bring them along.
