Who is it for?
The National Diploma is a two year course of 720 GLH which supports enthusiastic learners interested in working or are already working in the construction sector. It has been developed by employers and professional bodies to ensure it fully supports entry onto the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment or a range of relevant specialist degrees; as well as other construction career pathways at technician level such as design/architecture, construction supervision/management. It is equivalent to 2 “A” levels.

Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs including maths, English and Science GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above or a vocational course at Level 2.

What does the course involve?
Construction principles, design and technology as well as health and safety and building regulations in the first year, followed by in the second year surveying, graphical detailing, project management, building surveying and quantity surveying. This is to prepare you for employment, Apprenticeships and Higher Education in jobs such as Surveyor, Quantity Surveyor, Site Supervision, Contracts Management and Architecture. It also allows progression to the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment here at Shrewsbury Colleges Group.

How is the course assessed?
There are ten units of which seven are mandatory. Two units are externally set and marked. Eight assessments are internally set and assessed; using a range of assessment methods including assignments, reports, phase tests, individual projects, surveys, risk assessments and method statements. Trips: A full or partial contribution to any trips must be made, the cost will vary depending on the details of the trip.

Additional Notes
Equipment: we highly recommend that you have a 4GB memory stick or hard drive with a high capacity, lever arch file, note pad, protective footwear, and waterproof coat.
