Higher National Certificates (HNCs) / Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are work-related higher education qualifications that are highly valued by employers. HNCs/HTQs focus on 'learning by doing' and give you skills that are specific to your job.
An HNC/HTQ qualification related to the industry you work in will improve your professional status and count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations.
Studying an HNC/HTQ is also perfect if you are progressing from college as you’ll learn the skills needed to move into your chosen career. An HNC/HTQ is a Level 4 qualification and is equivalent to one year of higher education study.
HNCs/HTQs are assessed through assignments, projects, and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course. If you complete an HNC/HTQ, the grades in each subject unit are shown as pass, merit or distinction.
Construction Management for England (2023) | BTEC Higher Nationals | Pearson qualifications
This two-year part-time course is aimed at those wishing to further their academic qualifications and enhance their career opportunities in the Construction Industry. The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction Management for England is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to higher education.
All applicants are individually assessed on their qualifications, skills, and experience. You should have the desire to further your career in the Construction Industry and hold either a Level 3 NVQ Diploma or BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction, a BTEC National Award or A Levels or equivalent. Ideally, applicants should also have GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent). If the applicant has the necessary experience within professional roles but not the appropriate qualification, then this will be assessed on evidence of work history
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards. They offer a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding.
The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows direct progression to employment. A typical progression path for Pearson BTEC HNC students is to an honours degree programme, this depending on the match of the Pearson BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question. Typical degrees at UCEM and University of Wolverhampton in Construction related disciplines should allow access to the second year of that course.
The course will include the following units:
Year one
Year two
Your work will be continually assessed throughout the course. The assessment will depend upon the particular module being studied. Typical assessments include assignments, reports, phase tests, group and individual projects, presentations and case studies.
