Who is it for?
HTQ: Higher National Certificate/Diploma in General Engineering
This course is currently being review and aligned with the new HTQ standards. Content may change when the HTQ approval is provided.
The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in each pathway, with the opportunity to pursue a particular interest through the appropriate selection of optional units. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for more intense subject specialisation at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-stud, directed study and workplace activities.

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements could include a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering; a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject, (this profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C and/or 9 to 4), or other related Level 3 qualifications.
Entry to the course may also be available through related work experience.

How is the course assessed?
Your work will be continually assessed throughout the course, with feedback provided on all work submitted. Assessment type will differ depending on which module is being assessed, including assignments, practical experiments, logbooks, and presentations.

Additional Notes
This full-time HNC is a 1-year programme. You will be required to attend college for two days a week (Wednesdays and Thursdays). The academic year is split into three terms over 30 weeks. You will be required to undertake an informal interview prior to enrolment. There are no concessions.
The college works hard to make university level study as easy and exciting as possible. This includes living away from home. If you require student accommodation, it is now available in the centre of Shrewsbury: Student accommodation | Shropshire Council

Further Information
Students can progress directly into a career in engineering, or you may choose to continue your studies and achieve an HND qualification.
You could work in different industries, from power and renewable energy to transport, construction and manufacturing.
You can improve your career prospects with incorporated or chartered engineer status. Chartered status can help you move into electrical design and project management roles, specialise in a particular field, or work as an engineering consultant. The Engineering Council have further details on how to become a chartered engineer.

Level 2 Fabrication and Welding
Previous school: Charlton School
I’m a practical person, so I wanted to do something with my hands. I didn’t have any experience before, but the teachers were really good at guiding me through. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so the fact that the staff let me work to my own pace really helped. I have now secured an Apprenticeship with Caterpillar in Shrewsbury, and I can see myself being there for some time. I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened unless I’d been on this course as at my interview they seemed really impressed with what I was doing.

Level 2 was mostly practical and this year on Level 3 there is a lot of theory and it's preparing me for university. I live outside of Shrewsbury and the transport links to the College are good.

I came here because I'm interested in Engineering. I really enjoyed doing my final project and having the creativity to come up with my own design and I have also enjoyed working with hydraulics. I achieved D*D*D* in my Diploma and am now going on to do an Apprenticeship. The teachers are helpful and the equipment at the College is state-of-the-art.

I took Product Design at A Level because I was inspired by my GCSE teacher. I really enjoy how hands on the subject is and using the computers to bring your designs to life. You can explore your creative side in a relaxed environment.
