Learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at level 3.
You will need 2 GCSE at grade 4 and above.
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beautician. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients whilst providing a range of beauty treatments. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed
Maths and English are a mandatory part of the course for learners that do not hold a grade C or above.
Achievement is through continual assessment in practical and theory. Written assignments and project work help to develop a portfolio of evidence. External end tests are performed in Health & Safety, Manicure, Pedicure, Nail Art, Make-Up, Eye Treatments and Anatomy and Physiology.
It is an expectation of professional practice to wear a uniform whilst in salon sessions. It is advisable to purchase a kit to allow you to practise your skills in and out of College. Diploma in Womens Hairdressing
Studying part-time has allowed me to train towards my career goal, as the course works well around my childcare support. Also, having the chance to work in Evolve, the College’s commercial salon, gives you the opportunity to learn the business side of salons. After completing the Level 2 I want to continue with my Level 3 and then become a mobile hairdresser.
Level 3 in Beauty Make-Up Techniques
Previous Institution: Lacon Childe School
We do makeup, spray tans, eyelashes and loads more. Eyelash extensions were my favourite thing to do this year and I can’t wait to progress with them. Having the commercial salon, Evolve, on campus provides a great experience for students to get to know what it’s like to work in a real salon. This course is totally worth it, but you need to have a passion for beauty and willing to work hard.
Level 3 Advanced Hairdressing
Previous Institution: Shrewsbury Academy
I came to SCG because the atmosphere felt good when I came to look around. The staff are friendly and helpful and they will always encourage you to achieve your goals. I’ve enjoyed working with real clients during training and work experience in Evolve Salon.
Level 2 Award in Cutting Men’s Hair
I was a plumber and wanted a career change. My friend who runs a barber’s inspired me to join the part-time Cutting Men’s Hair course at Shrewsbury Colleges Group. The teachers and facilities were great and learning in the evening meant I could carry on with my day job. Four months after completing the course I had opened The Fade Inn, my own Barber’s in Shrewsbury.
This course is linked to roles within the NHS.
