Who is it for?
This course is specifically designed for those aged 16-19 who want to become adult nurses. You will need to have a genuine interest in caring for people and the desire to make a difference in their lives.
Shrewsbury Colleges Group has partnered with the University of Chester to guarantee the Nursing Pathway students a place to study Adult Nursing at the University Centre Shrewsbury site. The course will give you access to valuable work placements within the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System (ICS) which includes Shropshire’s three main NHS Trusts; Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt NHS Foundation Trust and Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.
ICS work placements also include Shropshire based mental health services (as part of Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) as well as our two main hospices (Severn Hospice and Hope House), our Primary Care partners (GP practices) and our social care community partners. This will enable you to progress into employment within the Shropshire Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System settings.
You will need to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, to include English, Maths and Science. You must be positive, dedicated, and enthusiastic and have excellent communication skills. You will also need to apply for a DBS.
Please Note - If you are interested in other strands of nursing, such as children’s nursing, mental health, midwifery or paramedic science, you should choose Health & Social Care Diploma. This pathway has been developed to help meet the national shortage of adult nurses.
What does the course involve?
This is a rewarding career with many opportunities. You will work alongside nurses whilst on placement in NHS settings to learn about the role and to develop the skills required.

You will also have the opportunity to study extra courses, such as First Aid and the Care Certificate, all of which make you highly employable.
This course is perfect for those students who are looking to get into nursing locally. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the University Centre Shrewsbury for clinical skill sessions during their time on the nursing pathway, which will support their transition into Higher Education study.
How is the course assessed?
You will build a portfolio of evidence over the two years including written assignments, presentations, practical assessments, reflective accounts and placement reports and competencies checklists. You will also have four externally-assessed exams. You will be assessed during placement and have a set of competencies to sign off.
This course will give you a guaranteed route into adult nursing, with the opportunity to progress directly into adult nursing at the University of Chester on the condition of meeting entry requirements.
