Lauren Hobbs, currently studying Level 3 Hairdressing at Shrewsbury Colleges Group, competed in the Concept Hair Magazine competition at Hugh Baird College, Liverpool.

Lauren, aged 19, from Shrewsbury, came first in her category ‘Prom’ and will now go on to compete in the Grand Final, which will take place at the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy in London on 26 March.

The regional competitions are open to both apprentices and full-time trainee hairdressers of all levels.

Lauren, who attended Shrewsbury Academy, said: "Concept came into College and did a workshop with us. Our teacher then let us know about the competition and supported us in preparing us for it. I want to go to University to study Media Hair & Makeup, so I wanted to do the competition to build my confidence."

There was a choice of categories to choose from including Colouring, Barbering, Prom, Styling and Avant-Garde. Lauren chose Prom and only had 30 minutes to complete the look against 10 others in the category.

"This was the first competition I've ever done so winning it has made me feel so much more confident in myself and my skills," she added.

"I've always wanted to work with hair. I've really enjoyed studying at SCG as it has helped me build my confidence and build relationships with clients. The college has also introduced me to Media Hair & Beauty, something I didn't think about until I came here!"
