Yes and no.

Technically speaking, there isn’t a university in the traditional sense in Shrewsbury. However, you can still access university level courses through Higher Education centres that partner with existing universities whilst living in, or travelling to, Shrewsbury.

If you are looking to study university level courses in Shrewsbury, then there are two options available to you:

The Higher Education Centre at Shrewsbury Colleges Group offers university level courses and qualifications. Including an ‘Access to Higher Education’ course, which is a nationally recognised qualification. These diplomas bridge the gap between your current education, and the entry requirements for degree-level study. If you hold this qualification, you are then eligible for degree-level courses across the country.

The Higher Education Centre partners with Staffordshire University to deliver degree-level courses, such as the BA (Hons) in Education. This course can begin at foundation level and runs all the way through to a full degree.

Alongside this, the college provides a plethora of other university level courses, including Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, across a range of subject areas. These include building and construction, computing and IT, counselling, engineering, music, performing arts, sport and outdoor activities, and teaching and education. These courses can be used as a springboard into employment, to further your career, or to prepare you for higher-level study.

There is also the option of studying a higher-level apprenticeship, earning money as you learn as well as extensive practical knowledge, leading to a high chance of employment when your studies conclude.

The other option for Higher Education study is The University Centre Shrewsbury. This Higher Education centre opened in autumn 2014 and is run by Chester University in conjunction with Shropshire Council. It offers foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses, with a focus on Adult Nursing, Biotechnology, and Medicinal and Sports Sciences. You can find the centre online here: University Centre Shrewsbury | University of Chester

There is even student accommodation now in Shrewsbury. Students can choose from two accommodation options, Mardol House and Tannery East. Both these accommodations are located in the centre of Shrewsbury, with all the great shops, pubs, and other amenities that Shrewsbury has to offer, such as the Quarry, just a stone’s throw away.

Studying in Shrewsbury has many benefits, and the town serves as an idyllic backdrop to your education. It is a fast growing place, with stunning buildings, independent businesses and cafes, and a vibrant nightlife. We are sure that whatever you decide to study, you will enjoy your time in Shrewsbury.
