Who is it for?
This course is for learners interested in dressmaking, sewing and textiles.
No formal qualifications are needed but some evidence of ability and a keen interest in the subject.
What does the course involve?
The course will involve learning dressmaking skills and techniques; taking correct body measurements, following a commercial pattern, pattern adaptation and alteration, garment assembly, different seam finishes, different fastenings, working with different fabrics and their application.
There is a research element into using these skills in creative enterprise and the working environment.
A portfolio of work will be produced by each learner, which will be assessed
How is the course assessed?
Work is assessed by use of materials, tools and equipment, research into creative enterprise and employment opportunities, development of ideas, a portfolio of work and a final piece.
Through completion of set projects these are marked internally and verified by the exam board (NCFE). The marks are all related to coursework.
Learners will need to provide their own patterns, fabrics and some basic tools.
Learners can choose what garment to make, originality and individuality are encouraged through tutor’s guidance.
You will need to provide your own basic sewing kit (tape measure; fabric scissors; sewing needles; pins; unpicker) and you will need to purchase your own fabrics during each project. Plus 2H & 4H pencils; sharpener; rubber; paper scissors; A4 files and plastic pockets & sketch books. (The teacher will advise you of all of this at the start of the course).
