Hair, Beauty & Therapies

This industry offers a wealth of opportunities in salons and spas, as stylists for TV, film, theatre and advertising agencies, or even setting up your own business. Our full-time and part-time courses cover a wide spectrum, from Levels 1-3 in Hairdressing, Barbering, Make-up and Nail Technician and Beauty Therapy, to a Level 3 in Complementary Therapies. We also offer Apprenticeships at intermediate and Advanced Levels in both Hairdressing and Beauty.

Training takes place in our professional-standard hair and beauty training salons at London Road Campus. In-house competitions are judged by influential, local employers and students also enter national competitions such as Blackpool National Hairdressing competition and WorldSkills, where they have achieved gold awards.

Level 3 Hairdressing
Previous school: Shrewsbury Academy

Hairdressing is something I have wanted to do since I was little and I came to SCG because the atmosphere felt good when I came to look around. The staff are friendly and helpful – they will always encourage you to achieve your goals. I’ve really enjoyed working with real clients during training and being given the chance to work in Evolve Salon which is a nice, modern salon. After College I would like to become a mobile hairdresser, or work in a salon. I might run my own business in the future.

Diploma in Womens Hairdressing

Studying part-time has allowed me to train towards my career goal, as the course works well around my childcare support. Also, having the chance to work in Evolve, the College’s commercial salon, gives you the opportunity to learn the business side of salons. After completing the Level 2 I want to continue with my Level 3 and then become a mobile hairdresser.

Level 2 Award in Cutting Men’s Hair

I was a plumber and wanted a career change. My friend who runs a barber’s inspired me to join the part-time Cutting Men’s Hair course at Shrewsbury Colleges Group. The teachers and facilities were great and learning in the evening meant I could carry on with my day job. Four months after completing the course I had opened The Fade Inn, my own Barber’s in Shrewsbury.

Level 3 in Beauty Make-Up Techniques
Previous school: Lacon Childe School

I progressed from the Level 2 course and really enjoy it - you need to have a passion for beauty and be willing to work hard. After college I would like to work in a salon then, with some experience, set up on my own. Having the commercial salon, Evolve, on campus is great experience for the students.

Level 2 Makeup and Nails
Previous school: Meole Brace School

I wasn’t sure I could do makeup and nails – I have always loved it, but decided to study business after school. However, I wasn’t enjoying myself and decided to take the leap of faith into beauty and I haven’t looked back since. After I’ve completed this course I want to progress onto Level 3. The course is fun and everybody is really nice – teachers and students.
