Science is an excellent base for university degrees in a range of areas including biological research, medical, environmental, forensics, medicine, veterinary science, oceanography pharmacy, sports and science communication. The transferable skills you will learn, such as problem solving, are also useful for many other areas, such as Law.

BTECs develop skills and understanding of work within a vocational context and offer direct progression on to BTEC Higher Nationals, Foundation Degrees and First Degree Programmes. BTEC Nationals are recognised by higher education institutions and attract UCAS points. Typically over 90% of our students progress to Higher Education.

The College has a brilliant reputation and creates a lot of future Russell Group students. Having the opportunity to take part in the Royal Chemistry Society’s Schools’ Analyst Competition was a useful experience and the support systemat College is great - you can email your teachers whenever you need their help. I would like to study Biochemistry in 2020, so I will spend my next year improving my knowledge through work experience and researching the best suited university for my needs.

A Level Biology (Chemistry, Maths)
Previous Institution: Church Stretton School

I took Biology A Level because I have always wanted to be a vet, and I chose to study at SCG because I liked the area - Shrewsbury is such a nice place to be. My favourite thing to do is dissection because it is hands-on and you learn so much in those lessons. Next year I hope to study Veterinary Science at Bristol University.

Applied Science BTEC, Business BTEC

I had heard great reviews for the College from past and present students. Coming here meant I could be on the Two Plus programme and get my English GCSE so I can complete my A Levels. After college I would like to do a higher Apprenticeship in Engineering. Applied Science gives you a good understanding of the work environment in the science industry and I’ve really enjoyed learning about protein biosynthesis.

Applied Science BTEC (Sport BTEC, A Level Maths)
Previous Institution: The Priory School

Applied Science is a very interactive and fun subject. Experiments are my favourite thing to do and there are lots to get stuck into. Applied Science can really help you gain UCAS points and get good results. This summer I will be going to work at a sports camp in Pennsylvania through Camp America. I would then like to continue into a sports-based career and this BTEC will be an asset.

I chose Biology because it links up really well with my other chosen subjects and it will hold me in good stead for going to university to study paramedic sciences so that I can become a Paramedic.

I really enjoy Chemistry and think it’s a great subject. I want to study Engineering at university and my Chemistry A Level will help. It is an exciting subject with loads of practical sessions. It allows you to investigate everyday things and discover how they work.
