You will need a strong interest in the theory and practical elements of sport, and a desire to excel in a chosen sporting area, or to help others perform at their highest level. We offer a Physical Education A Level and a wide range of vocational qualifications, with the opportunity to take a Level 3 qualification alongside full-time rugby or football coaching.
There is the opportunity and expectation to improve your team sports through the Wednesday afternoon sports programme and after College clubs. Career opportunities range from outdoor activity instructors, sports physiotherapists, the military, adventure training, management and leadership roles and overseas jobs such as skiing instructors and Camp America. Many of our students go straight into rewarding jobs, others choose to progress to university or our own Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Physical Education.
We are proud of our partnership with Shrewsbury Town Football Club, teaching their scholars at our industry standard facilities on London Road and jointly delivering the football and education programme.
Sport & Outdoor Activity Courses
Level 3 Football & Education Extended Diploma in Sport
Previous Institution: Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury
I loved all the practical fitness in the first year of the course and it is so interesting to learn about anatomy and physiology. The tutors and facilities are great with good, professional coaching.
Level 3 Outdoor Activities
Previous school: Burton Borough School
The amount of activity days we get to go on throughout the year is amazing. It is a sporty and energetic course, but with so many amazing activities other than generic sports. It is great that we get to fundraise for a charity and even better that this year’s relates to someone on our course. Everyone works really hard on the course and the teachers are supportive – it’s great to be around like-minded people.
Level 3 ACTIVE IQ Certificate in Personal Training
Previous Institution: Mary Webb School
I left school and did the Diploma, then returned to do the Level 2 Personal Training course which gave me the expertise to be a fitness instructor, as well as specialist skills from modules in spinning, circuits, kettlebells and exercise to music. While I was doing the course I started working in local gyms and decided to progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, which is a distance learning course and allowed me to fit my studies around my work.
Level 2 ACTIVE IQ Certificate in Personal Training
The part-time courses at Shrewsbury Colleges Group were perfect for me as they fit in around my career and social life. It was a very different experience coming back into education as an older learner, but the staff and fellow students made me feel welcome. The classes taught me exactly what I needed and I felt encouraged to take on the other fitness courses.
