Department for Education (DfE) 2018 Performance Tables published last week confirmed Shrewsbury Colleges Group students make outstanding progress at A Level.

The recently published DfE Performance Tables show the results of sixth-form students in independent schools, grammar schools, 11-16 schools and colleges.

The tables affirm SCG’s excellent A Level value-added performance. Nationally, the College is in the top 20% of all providers with a progress score of +0.15. SCG is also ranked in the top 20% of sixth form colleges nationally. What makes this achievement particularly significant is that SCG is one of the largest providers of A Levels in the country.

In Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, SCG was ranked an impressive second overall out of 25 schools and colleges. SCG had more than three times as many entries as the next largest provider and was responsible for the majority of A Level students in Shropshire. Students made more progress at SCG than at any of the local grammar schools; SCG students make more progress than all but one of the independent schools, making the same progress as students at Concord College. These results highlight SCG’s commitment to ensuring that every student makes outstanding progress through excellent teaching, on-going assessment and creating a supportive environment for learning.

Principal James Staniforth said: “I am delighted that the DfE Performance Tables highlight what our own results analysis show, which is that our students make outstanding progress. This is the result of fantastic teaching, high quality pastoral support and a specialist sixth form experience. Our students benefit from the widest choice of A Levels in the area and our inclusive approach. Although the league tables don’t include vocational results, our BTEC students also perform at a very high level and other national systems show these vocational students also perform within the top 25% nationally. Two years after merger, SCG is providing outstanding outcomes for students across academic and vocational courses, outcomes which change the lives of our students”.

The announcement comes at a time when the College is taking applications and inviting pupils for interviews for A Levels and full-time Diplomas starting this September. SCG is now the largest college in Shropshire offering the broadest and most flexible curriculum for school leavers in the county. *A score of 1.00 means on average all entries were a grade higher than expected based on prior attainment. A positive score means students make better progress than expected. A negative score means they have made less progress than expected.
