Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice: Game Design & Concept Art Pathway

During the course most of the equipment you need will be supplied, however you will need to pay for printing costs and some educational visits may also incur a charge. We advise that students have some form of storage media (USB Flash Drive or SD card) for back up and transport of work in order to complete homework.

The Game Design and Concept Art pathway is for ambitious students who are excited to follow a career in the games industry, which is one of the leading creative professions in the UK and worldwide. You will learn how to visualise ideas, create 3D models, and design games; as well as exploring key techniques for developing characters, environments and objects which underpin every game concept. You will also learn more about marketing in the games industry.

As the games industry is constantly evolving, we are looking for students who are passionate about games and game art, with a keen desire to develop fresh and unique ideas. You will be willing to learn a variety of digital and traditional techniques and to engage in creative briefs, working both individually and in a team. 

Students who achieve a Merit or above in the Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media can progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media. 

Students who wish to enrol directly onto Level 3 must have achieved a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language.

Over the two years you will develop skills across a variety of media including 3D modelling and animation, game level design, concept art, story writing, audio, and product promotion. You will also have opportunities to explore AR and VR, using the Oculus Quest, as well as using our 3D printer to create real, physical objects. 

Software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk Mudbox, Blender, Unity, Unreal

Equipment: Drawing tablets and Digital Canvases, Oculus Quests, 3D Printer, Lightboards, Green Screen Studio, Audio Recording Booth, Rode Microphones

The Extended Diploma consists of two years of study, each comprising two units of practical coursework. All assignments are internally assessed and designed to give you the research, practical, and communication skills needed to progress in the industry in the future. Assignments will be completed through practical work, written reports, presentations, blogs, and vlogs. On successful completion of the two-year course, you will attain an Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice.

Potential careers from this course are in game design, 3D Modelling and animation, concept art, illustration, esports, sound design or story writing, amongst many others. You could continue studying at a higher level, apply for an apprenticeship or employment, or forge your own freelance career. Many of the skills and techniques you will learn can also be used in other areas such as film, TV, animation, illustration, and product design. 

There will be an opportunity to attend the 'Create Your Future' UCAS Convention in Manchester to find out about creative courses at university. All Creative Media students will have the chance to take part in the end-of-year arts show, where you can display your work to the public.
