    Role Overview

An Autocare Technician Apprentice is someone who is learning how to inspect, maintain, and repair light vehicles while working under the supervision of experienced technicians. This role provides hands-on training combined with classroom-based learning, offering a strong foundation in vehicle mechanics, servicing, and customer care. It’s designed to develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress into a fully qualified technician role.

    🔹 Roles and Responsibilities

As an apprentice, you’ll gradually build your experience and confidence in a real workshop environment. Your responsibilities will include assisting with vehicle inspections and safety checks, helping to carry out routine servicing tasks, and learning how to replace common vehicle parts such as tyres, batteries, and filters. You'll also observe and support basic diagnostic procedures to identify faults, follow all relevant health and safety guidelines, and maintain accurate service and repair records. As your apprenticeship progresses, you will take on more responsibility and begin to complete tasks independently, under supervision.

    🔹 Who Is It For?

This apprenticeship is ideal for school leavers, career changers, or anyone aged 16 and over who has a strong interest in vehicles and enjoys practical, hands-on work. It suits individuals who are eager to learn, have good attention to detail, and are comfortable working as part of a team. While no previous experience is needed, basic maths, English, and IT skills will be helpful for completing the written and digital aspects of the training.

    🔹 Type of Employment

Autocare Technician Apprentices are employed full-time by a garage, dealership, or vehicle service centre. The role is paid, and apprentices are entitled to at least the minimum apprentice wage (often more, depending on the employer). Apprentices split their time between on-the-job training at the workplace and off-the-job learning, which may take place at a college or with a dedicated training provider. Most apprenticeships last between two to three years, depending on the specific programme and individual progress.

  • Entry Requirements

For this apprenticeship there are no set entry requirements but if you have not achieved GCSE Maths and English at a 4/C or above, you will be required to attempt Functional Skills Level 2 within the duration of the apprenticeship, if aged 16-18 years of age or stipulated by your employer.
