In November, 67 students took part in this multiple choice question test, which is designed to stimulate interest in Maths in pupils. The students gained multiple awards, with 24 achieving a bronze certificate, 20 achieving silver and 6 achieving gold. Some of the students gained enough marks to take part in further challenges, with Rose Barnes and Sam Morris performing in the top 25% nationally and gaining merit awards.

Addressing the successful students, James Staniforth, Shrewsbury Colleges Group Principal said: “The work you have been doing in Maths at the College is a big deal. Never lose sight of what you want and remember that education is fun. Whatever you do in the future you will have learnt some valuable life skills from A Level Maths.”

In addition, Brody Wooding, took part in the British Physics Olympiad and gained a bronze award.

Alongside the individual event, the UKMT also holds a Maths team challenge with the College’s team coming second in their regional heats against 17 other schools and colleges. The team was made up of Rose Barnes, Sam Morris, Aaron Lindsay and Nilavan Thipaharan, who spent their lunchtimes preparing in the weeks leading up to the competition.

Chris Luther, Maths Teacher, said: “The students showed fantastic mathematical talent, team work and problem-solving skills. The team’s dedication in the build up to the event certainly paid off, their excellent performance on the day resulted in us winning the silver award. Taking part in this challenge has enhanced the student’s mathematical skills and will prepare them well for future study.”
