Shrewsbury College is proud to celebrate the exceptional results of its students in this year’s A Level, T Level, BTEC and vocational qualifications.

The college, which is both Shropshire’s largest post-16 provider and the county’s only Ofsted Outstanding school sixth form or college, saw 1300 students complete Level 3 courses this summer.

A Level results saw a significant increase in the A*/A/B high grades, outstripping the excellent results from the previous year:

  • 98% pass rate at A Level for 806 students
  • 49% A*/A/B high grades at A Levels
  • Ten students achieved 3 A* or better
  • 68 students achieved AAA or better in their A Levels

Deryn Wheeler a former student of William Brookes School achieved four A* grades and a grade A. Deryn is progressing to study History at the University of Cambridge. Alice Wyke (Newport Girls') achieved four A* grades and will also study History at the University of Cambridge. Josh Martin (Lakelands Academy), James Penney (Belvidere School), Matt Robinson (The Priory) and Sophie Taylor (Meole Brace) also achieved four A* grades. Josh will now study Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, James will study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Matt will study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol, and Sophie will study Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge.

The West Midlands is one of two regions in the UK to see a drop in A Level entries receiving top grades. A Level results for the West Midlands show that top grades dropped from 24.8% in 2024 to 24.2% this year.

However, Shrewsbury College saw top grades increase from 25.1% to 29.1%, bucking the trend. This culture of excellence and improvement was partly why Ofsted judged the college to be outstanding in the inspection earlier this year.

The first cohort of 94 T Level students achieved a brilliant set of results which are amongst the very best in the country for this new, highly challenging qualification:

  • 97% pass rate compared with 89% nationally
  • 29% Distinction* and Distinctions compared 16% nationally
  • 82% Distinction*, Distinctions and Merits compared with 62% nationally

Just under 400 students also studied BTEC and other vocational qualifications, the equivalent of three A Levels:

  • 101 students achieved D*D*D* (Triple Star Distinction, the equivalent of three A* grades at A Level) on Extended Diploma Courses
  • 275 students achieved DDD (Triple Distinction, the equivalent of three A grades at A Level) or better on Extended Diploma Courses

James Staniforth, Principal of Shrewsbury College, expressed immense pride in the students and staff: ‘Our students' results are a testament not only to their talent and commitment but also to the high-quality teaching and pastoral care they receive here at Shrewsbury College. Whether heading to top universities, competitive apprenticeships, or directly into the world of work, our students are leaving us fully equipped for success.’

He continued: ‘Once again, our students have demonstrated resilience, dedication, and academic excellence and have achieved results that place them among the top-performing colleges in the country. These results reflect the hard work of our students and the unwavering support of our dedicated staff.’
