Level 2 Diploma in Fabrication & Welding

Students will be expected to provide their own overalls/clothing for workshop and safety shoes.

This course and level is ideal if you are a school leaver with some engineering knowledge and experience, or you require some engineering skills in your role. You will develop your understanding and practical experience of basic engineering operations including welding & fabrication.

This qualification can help you to progress in a wide range of engineering roles including: Engineering operative; Engineering maintenance technician; Mechanical engineering technician; Sheet metal worker; Welder.

You could also progress onto the Level 3 City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering.

A minimum of 4 GCSEs @ grade 4 or above including Maths and English; or a Level 1 Certificate in Engineering.

Fabrication and welding allow for metal structures to be made into a range of shapes and sizes. The techniques you will learn on this course are an essential component of industries like engineering and construction. You will be supported through your studies by experienced teachers who will help you learn about engineering technology and technical information. You'll get practical advice and experience in our purpose-built engineering facilities at the London Road Campus.

This course covers a range of topics to develop your knowledge of fabrication and welding techniques.

These include:

• Engineering health & safety
• Principles of engineering technology
• Principles of fabrication and welding technology
• Manual Metal Arc welding (MMA)
• Metal Inert Gas welding (MIG)
• Tungsten Inert Gas welding (TIG)
• Manual sheet fabrication and patternmaking.

You will learn through a combination of practical and classroom-based sessions.

Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments. 

Assessment for this course includes online and written exams, practical assessment, and completion of a portfolio of coursework.

On completion of this course, you will have the option to progress a the Level 3 course in Engineering. This includes the T Level in Design & Development for Engineering & Manufacturing. An alternative option would be to undertake an apprenticeship in Engineering. All these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group and would also enable you to progress to higher education, such as our HNC or HND Engineering courses. 

We'll supplement the classroom teaching with visits to engineering companies to observe the skills you are learning and put these into practice.

HNCs in Electrical and Electronic Technology, Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering are available to study at Shrewsbury Colleges Group.
