Photography Student Snaps Up Challenge To Work With Global Company

Photography Student Snaps Up Challenge To Work With Global Company

Tea & Water Pictures are an artist representation agency based in London and New York. They approached SCG to get photography-enthused students involved in their I♥Shrewsbury project.

Students were asked to use photography to tell a story of somebody who lives or works in Shrewsbury. The winning student will have their photographs and story published in the first edition of the I♥Shrewsbury magazine, and will also get the chance to spend the day with Jørn Tomter, an experienced and professional photographer.

Oscar Haywood Martin, from Caersws in Powys, entered the competition and his work was chosen for the project. Oscar studies A Level Photography, Electronics and Film Studies – and hopes to continue working in photography after college.

Oscar said: “Every time I walk between English and Welsh Bridge Campuses I notice a violin shop along the Town Walls and thought it would be perfect for this project. Julian Batey Violins is filled to the brim with orchestral stringed instruments and that created a great aesthetic for my photography. I spent a few hours speaking to the owner and photographing him and the store interior. I was so surprised when my work was chosen, but this is such a great opportunity for me.”

Student Wins Top Of The Range Prize With Aga

Student Wins Top Of The Range Prize With Aga

AGA Rangemaster Group presented a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to our vocational Art and Design students.

Over 50 students took part in a design competition that the renowned British manufacturer, arranged specifically for Shrewsbury Colleges Group students - to create new print designs for their textiles collection. Students produced original patterns that got whittled down to one successful winner.

Josh Bloomfield, Thomas Harrill, Georgia Hudson and Karolina Wysocka were shortlisted, with Georgia’s design, ‘Blackthorn Winter’ eventually chosen to be turned into products that will be sold nationwide. The green colours and floral patterns really impressed the company and helped them come to their final decision.

Georgia, 17, from Shrewsbury said: "I didn’t expect to win at all, I’m quite shocked. It was a difficult assignment, but I loved practising my art. I am both nervous and excited for the next steps I’ll be taking with the team at AGA.

"After researching the market and understanding their target customers I chose elements that would complement the most popular colours that AGAs come in. I wanted to look at winter because I was drawn to use dark greens and winter flowers."

The top-of-the-range prize invites Georgia to meet the design team and see the processes involved in developing the textile collection to sell. She will also have the opportunity to travel to Portugal to see it being created at the printing factory and her designs will be sold online and in-store.

Multiple Maths Challenges Tackled By Top Class Students

Multiple Maths Challenges Tackled By Top Class Students

In the autumn term 67 students took part in the challenges designed to stimulate interest in maths in pupils. The students scooped a hoard of awards, with 24 achieving a Bronze Certificate, 20 achieving Silver and six achieving Gold. Two of these students gained enough marks to take part in further challenges, where they gained Merit Awards.

A team of four students (Sam Morris, Rose Barnes, Aaron Lindsay and Nilavan Thipaharan) also got through to the regional final for the Team Challenge by showing fantastic mathematical talent and problem solving.

The team finished with a score of 158 – only two points away from winning the event!

Hospitality & Catering students smashed it at the Welsh International Culinary Championships in February, bringing home 21 medals.

The students travelled to Llandrillo College in North Wales, to compete over three days against 16 other colleges in 34 competitions, from smoothie making to table laying.

It was the largest team of students we have ever taken to the Championships. The accolades weren’t just for the students, one of our teachers won a bronze medal too! These were all presented at a ceremony at Llandudno Bay Hotel on the last day of the competition.

Ellie Butler, from Bridgnorth, won a gold medal and claimed the very prestigious Eric Bruce Award for Best Junior. She said: “I competed in a knife skills and street food competition. I created a spicy Korean pork dish with rice and courgette noodles. The Championships are fun to be involved in. We’re used to cooking in the professional kitchens at College with only our teachers and classmates watching, but here we had a bigger crowd and that was a good confidence builder. I really enjoy the course and aim to be a chef once I’ve completed it.”

College Students win In Textile Design Competition

College Students win In Textile Design Competition

Past and present students studying Fashion and Textiles have excelled at Shrewsbury Drapers Company Textile Design Competition.

Second year A Level student, Becky Longland, won the prestigious Jackie Ryan Memorial Award for her ‘Chinese Lion’ wall-hanging. This award gives the winner an opportunity to complete a two week placement at Tweedmill Textiles in North Wales. Becky will design a pure wool throw that will be available for purchase as a limited edition item.

Former A Level students Katie Cutler, Emily Cooper and Niamh Hope were respectively awarded Gold, Silver and Highly Commended for their entries; with HNC Fashion & Textiles student, Nicola Riley and Level 2 Art & Design student, Izzy Hughes also gained Highly Commended awards.

“It took a long time to create my applique and wool lion – but I had loads of fun doing it. It was lovely to see all the different entries and how people had responded to the theme (Oriental Journey) when I went to the awards ceremony – that was followed by surprise and excitement when I heard I had won the Jackie Ryan Award. I am especially looking forward to my placement.”
Becky Longland, from Wellington
