This short higher-level programme focusses on:
Principles of Health Education
Health education is a key role of all healthcare practitioners and is aimed at equipping others with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to promote and maintain health and, ultimately, positively influence health outcomes. In addition, health education is a key focus for the government, underpinned by the significant increase in funding in this area over recent years owing to its significant benefits to health outcomes.
Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice
Reflective practice is used throughout the health and social care professions as a means of improving skills, reviewing how situations were managed and identifying areas in need of further development. This promotes the use of best practices and a more professional approach to the users of services. Reflective practice works to ensure that a high-quality service is offered to the users of services, and the effective practitioner identifies areas for development and where they can share good practice.

Who is it for?
This 8-week part-time course is aimed at those wishing to further their academic qualifications and enhance their career opportunities within the health sector. The HND in Health Professions’ Support has been designed to enable students to undertake a qualification that is completely relevant to the service users they care for, the professions they support and their employers.

Entry Requirements
All applicants are individually assessed on their qualifications, skills, and experience. You should have the desire to further your career in the health care sector and hold an industry-related level 3 qualification, A Levels or equivalent.
Ideally, applicants should also have GCSE maths and English (or equivalent). If the applicant has the necessary experience within professional roles but not the appropriate qualification, then this will be assessed on evidence of work history.

What does the course involve?
Unit 5: Principles of Health Education - this unit aims to develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills regarding providing and supporting the provision of health education to improve the health and well-being of individuals accessing healthcare services. It will develop students’ understanding of the factors that impact health and explore the methods used to identify health inequalities at a local level. Students will also enhance their understanding of the relationship between health beliefs and illness, enabling them to assess how health beliefs can influence communication between healthcare practitioners and service users. This unit will also provide an opportunity to discuss ways in which barriers to effective communication can be addressed and overcome.
Unit 24: Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice - this unit provides students with an opportunity to further develop their skills as reflective practitioners. It requires students to bring together classroom and previous real-world knowledge from across their programme, demonstrating their professional development using reflective approaches. Through this unit, students will be supported to take responsibility for their own learning, demonstrate their capacity to continuously learn and grow, reflect on their own practice and encourage others to develop their practice.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care
Previous school: William Brookes School
When I was younger I spent a lot of time in hospital and the wonderful staff inspired me to pursue a career as a midwife. The teachers always answer your queries and help you manage your time. Last year I got a distinction for Level 2 and was eager to come back this year. The partnership between SCG and the NHS offers an amazing opportunity. I have started as a Health Care Assistant at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Megan O’Neill
Health & Social Care BTEC (History, Sociology)
Previous Institution: The Priory School
I took Health & Social Care because I want to be a primary school teacher. It is an assignment based course, so there is less pressure and you get to do amazing placements for hands-on experience and I went to a primary school. I will be going to study BA Primary Education after College.
