  • Who is it for?

If you are interested in developing your own rugby skills and performance, alongside the study of coaching and training, then this  BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Development (Rugby Pathway) is for you. Tactical skills, physiology, nutrition, coaching and sports performance are just some of the rugby-related subject areas that will be explored.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Development (Rugby Pathway) enables students to learn about the theory behind sport in great depth. It gives them the opportunity to gain experience for use in the work place or as a stepping stone to higher education, here at Shrewsbury College or within a wide range of other providers. The variety of subjects gives students the opportunity to study most areas of sport and allows them to decide which field they wish to work towards.

Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress onto the Sports Coaching and Physical Education Foundation Degree at Shrewsbury College or progress onto higher education programmes at other institutions, for example Sports Studies, Sports Management or Sports Science.

  • Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, preferably including English Language or Mathematics. BTEC First Diploma (Merit or Distinction) together with a grade 4 in English Language or Mathematics. All applicants must have a good reference.

  • What does the course involve?

This course enables learners to gain a vocational sport qualification alongside full time rugby coaching. As part of the rugby programme learners will be able to receive 6 hours of rugby coaching per week from highly experienced coaches, and have the opportunity to take part in regional and national competitions.

You will gain a valuable insight into coaching and training techniques for a range of rugby populations, from young children to elite professional players. This will include work placements in local schools and rugby clubs delivering rugby sessions. You will also be given the tools needed to examine your own play and team play, ensuring you improve and develop as a player throughout your time with us.

Previous school: Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury

I've learnt many new skills on this course such as team building and team work, which I have put into practice with my peers when we have been mountain walking and the weather conditions have been bad.

Level 2 ACTIVE IQ Certificate in Personal Training

The part-time courses at Shrewsbury Colleges Group were perfect for me as they fit in around my career and social life. It was a very different experience coming back into education as an older learner, but the staff and fellow students made me feel welcome. The classes taught me exactly what I needed and I felt encouraged to take on the other fitness courses.

Level 3 Sports
Previous school: Overseas school

I wanted to do a sports focused course, but still look at a wide variety of sports – which is what you get at SCG, and I prefer continuous assessment rather than exams. The tutors are also really down to earth. I am part of the College Netball team and it is a great mix of students from all three campuses. I am going to Gloucester University to study Sports Therapy.

I loved all the practical fitness in the first year of the course and it is so interesting to learn about anatomy and physiology. The tutors and facilities are great with good, professional coaching.
