Bridges Cafés, the College dining areas on each campus, offer students a wide range of menus to keep you energised for your learning. There is a variety of hot and cold foods, including healthy options hidden within tasty treats, as well as hot and cold drinks and snack vending machines. Bridges Cafés are open from 8.00am until 3.00pm across all three campuses (8.00am until 6:30pm, Monday - Thursday at London Road Campus).

Our London Road site offers 177 seats indoors and a further 66 outdoors with huge bi-folding patio doors to make the space bright and breezy, a welcoming space which is extremely popular with staff and students alike.

The Bridges Cafés at both English and Welsh Bridge campuses are both 42 seat cafés, offering a welcome break from the classroom, to sit with a coffee while continuing your studies or socialising with your friends.

Our friendly catering team are always happy to lend a hand so if there’s something you like, but can’t see, then ask a member of the team and we will be happy to help.

Shrewsbury Colleges Group Food Services Mission Statement: We are committed to offering a combination of cost based and competitively priced products which offer value for money and also meet the needs of an ever increasing, wide ranging spectrum of dietary needs.

Our state of the art Engineering and Construction Centre allows students to learn in a fully modernised environment and benefit from industry standard facilities which will help them to be employment ready.
Student’s views played a significant part in the design of the centre, which incorporates open plan workshops with large skylights and a vibrant colour scheme.

The building was designed using the ‘Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method’ (BREEAM), which is a voluntary measurement rating for green buildings established in the UK. To achieve its BREEAM status, the building automatically controls the heating and lighting and its energy usage is continually monitored.

The new roof and external walls are insulated in excess of building standards to ensure minimum heat loss during the winter and minimum heat gain during the summer. In addition, the new barrel vaulted skylights in the workshop roof now make better use of natural light.

The new self-contained facility includes:

  • FESTO FMS ‘product manufacturing factory’ and mechatronics suite
  • CAD suite with industry standard 2D and 3D modelling software.
  • Dedicated electronics classroom
  • A dedicated Carpentry & Joinery machine shop together with site carpentry “site area” and bench joinery workshops
  • A total of eight classrooms
  • An Engineering workshop incorporating CNC, machining, fitting, mechanical assemblies, sheet metal fabrication and welding bays
  • A Motor Vehicle workshop which is an IMI MOT approved training centre
  • Trade competence assessment area for electricians and gas engineers
  • Large open-space training areas for electrical, plumbing and gas students, with 24 training bays
  • Development areas for rainwater harvesting, solar energy and fire suppression technology

The Engineering Department has seen around £1m in investment over the last few years to install the latest, cutting-edge and in some cases, world first equipment. This was largely thanks largely to £500k in funding from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), via its Growth deal with Government to develop one of three advanced manufacturing training hubs in the region. The College added a further £250k investment and with gifts from a number of other companies, including Status Metrology, who put £100k towards metrology equipment and software for the College.

Our Motor Vehicle department teaches students in an industry standard working garage, based at London Road Campus. We are an MOT approved training centre, with a full MOT test lane and the latest hybrid vehicle and vehicle diagnostic and repair facilities that all students have access to throughout their course. Theory sessions are delivered in specialist classrooms which contain various visual learning aids and test / diagnostics rigs.

The College owns varied vehicles for students to develop their skills and knowledge on. They then progress onto working on vehicles belonging to staff to complete general activities such as servicing, exhaust replacements, wheel balancing, vehicle geometry, diagnostics, as well as valeting. The workshop provides students with ‘real working issues and complications’ in preparation for entering the industry.

Continued large scale investment ensures that the Music Technology department can cater for students on a wide range of subjects, from Level 2 to HND, using a wealth of industry standard facilities and equipment.

We have a brand new iMac Production Suite which features 21.5” iMacs, each with controller keyboards and Scarlett audio interfaces. Each computer features industry standard DAW software, such as Avid Pro Tools and Apple Logic Pro X. Along with the larger production suite, a smaller breakout room with iMacs has been created to facilitate project work whilst the production suite is in use.

The department features three recording studios, along with dedicated control rooms. Studio 1 features an Allen & Heath Zed r16 hybrid mixing console, Rokit 6 studio monitors and sub speaker and a patch bay with a valve pre-amp, valve compressor and multi effects unit. Each studio features also a 27” iMac with Pro Tools and Logic Pro X. Each live room features an acoustic drum kit, a wide range of bass, electric and acoustic guitars and keyboards, including a Roland Juno. Bass, electric and acoustic amplifiers are also available in each room.

We have a wide range of microphones to choose from, allowing for a wide range of recording projects to be undertaken. This includes industry favourites the Shure SM58 and SM57 along with AKG D112, Shure drum microphone sets and specialist microphones including SE Electronics SEX1R, Zoom Portable recorder and a RØDE NT2-A. Our PA system runs HK Audio tops and sub speakers via a Behringer X Air, controlled by laptop, phone or tablet computer. We also have Pioneer XDJ-RX2 all-in-one mixing console, Roland V-Drums, Roland SH-201 synthesisers, electronic drum machines and loop-stations.

The College is the first training provider in the world with a Festo FMS Industry 4.0 Product Manufacturing Factory and mechatronics suite. The system, described as a ‘smart factory that fits within a classroom setting’ has wireless connectivity and includes nine stations for distribution and testing, product handling and processing, robotic assembly and automatic warehousing.

Our CAD and Design suite uses industry standard 2D and 3D modelling software and additive manufacturing (AM) equipment that uses 3D printing to create functional, industrial components including prototypes, tooling and end-use production parts. The suite also contains a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) which measures the geometry of physical objects.

The Engineering workshop incorporates CNC mills and lathes, as well as a press brake machine pressing tool for bending sheet and plate material. There are also MIG, TIG and MMA welding bays and a dedicated electronics suite. More traditional engineering equipment is also used for manual machining, bench fitting, mechanical assemblies and sheet metal fabrication.

We have four fully equipped and spacious Biology labs that have recently been refurbished with the latest work surfaces suitable for microbiology. Workbenches are moveable to give us a range of options for different teaching and practical activities.

In chemistry, there are three fully equipped laboratories, two recently refurbished. There is support provided by two technicians, and the department offers a wide range of practical activities, including complex organic preparations in both the first and second year of the course. The chemistry department also has links with outside agencies to support extended practical work.

A Level Physics and Electronics have three well equipped laboratories (two for physics and one for physics/electronics) housing a wide range of practical equipment, including laptops with physics programmes and electronic design software to support all practical work as well as allowing demonstrations. The Electronics lab is well-equipped with plenty of components and resources to allow the design and construction of electronics projects.

Theatre

Situated at London Road Campus, our working performance black box theatre has racked seating for 70 people or for 100 in conference style.
